There is no definitive answer to this question. If you ask 10 people in a room, you are likely to get 10 different answers. The reason for this is that people choose their favorite plastic trash bags based on different criteria, according to their own personal needs.

Plastic trash bags can probably be divided into two broad categories. Each category has advantages and weaknesses. These two types are high and low density; sometimes also called heavy-duty or light-duty. Heavy-duty bags are made from thicker material. They do not stretch very easily, and they are much more resistant to tears, rips, and breakage. They can also generally handle greater quantities of garbage. So why would anyone use anything other than these seemingly wondrous heavy-duty bags? You probably already know the answer: price. Like all things in life, when it comes to trash bags, you get what you pay for. Luckily, we don’t always need our plastic trash bags to be this strong. If we are using the bag for our daily kitchen garbage, then a light-duty bag is all that is required. The only recommendation I would make if you choose to go with light-duty bags is: don’t let them get too full and empty them often. If you don’t heed this advice, you will undoubtedly find yourself cleaning up many more needless garbage spills.

2. A Clear Choice

Many people are going with clear plastic trash bags over traditional white or black bags. Why? Because many cities which run recycling programs require that you put all recyclables in a clear bag so that the contents can be easily identified. Since these people have been forced to buy clear plastic bags anyways, they have found it easier to use them for all their disposal needs, rather than over-complicate things by keeping track of many different bags used for many different purposes.

3. Most Popular Brands

Most people agree that there are two businesses whose plastic trash bags are excellent. These two companies are Glad and Hefty. It’s likely that you have heard of them or have used their products already. Both of these brands produce both heavy-duty and light-duty bags in a wide variety of sizes. Of course, there are cheaper brands, like those you might find at Costco or Wal-mart, but I have generally found those to tear and break much more often than Glad or Hefty. Which one do I like more? Really, neither. I usually buy whichever one is on sale.

The reason I buy the one on sale is because there are ALWAYS sales occurring. There’s never any good reason to pay an outrageous amount for plastic trash bags, especially because we are likely to have to buy them again within a few weeks. If we’re not careful, it can add up to quite a large expense.
