Outdoor Trash Cans

Outdoor trash cans are an important part of your home. Though it may be true that our kitchen trash can is the garbage bin we use most often, we usually need one or more outdoor trash cans to transfer our garbage to when these indoor trash cans become full. Some creative folks have attempted to use outdoor trash cans in place of their indoor trash cans in an attempt to minimize the number of times they must take out the garbage, but this is the exception rather than the rule. Though this can be practical, outdoor trash cans usually take up more space and aren’t as fashionable as many modern kitchen trash cans are.

Here are a few tips to help you choose from the many outdoor trash cans that are available:

1. Volume

How big do you need your outdoor trash bin to be? The biggest factor in this decision is probably how often your garbage is collected. In some places, the garbage is collected once a week, but in other places it is collected twice a week. Often it is hard to tell exactly how much volume you will need in your garbage can, and only experience will help you to get it right. Obviously, the less often the trash collectors come, the bigger you will need your trash bin to be. Alternatively, you might decide that two medium-sized outdoor trash cans might do the trick.

2. Ease of Movement

One of the best things about outdoor trash cans are the innovations in maneuverability. I almost always buy outdoor trash cans that have built in wheels. The reasons for this are two-fold. First, wheeled trash cans are significantly easier to move around. A filled trash bin can become quite heavy when it becomes full. Second, wheels help to protect the bottom of the container. If once a week you drag your trash can out to the curb, you slowly but surely wear down the bottom. This is true no matter how durable your container happens to be. Durable bins might last longer, but you still do damage to it every time you drag it around. Eventually you will get holes in the corners and edges, you’ll have garbage leakage, and your garbage experience will be lessened. Wheeled outdoor trash cans can cost a few extra bucks, but this extra cost usually pays for itself in no time.

3. Paper or Plastic?

Oh, wait. That’s the question from the grocery store. When it comes to outdoor trash cans, the appropriate question is: Metal or Plastic? The traditional steel trash can that Oscar the Grouch called home can be an excellent choice. However, most people nowadays choose to purchase a high quality plastic container for their outdoor garbage needs. Rubbermaid is probably the most popular brand for these types of trash bins. Personally, I’d recommend a plastic bin, simply for the fact that metal bins usually don’t have wheels, which as I discussed above is one of my favorite features in outdoor trash cans.
