Outdoor Trash Can

An outdoor trash can is an integral part of any home. While your kitchen trash can is probably the most used waste bin in your home, most people find it crucial to also have an outdoor trash can. It is possible to have a single trash bin that you use for both purposes, but this is rare. For example, you might get a large trash can that is generally intended for outdoor use, and use it as your primary kitchen trash can. This can be particularly useful if your family produces a lot of trash on a daily basis. While this is a practical solution, most people don’t opt for this, because outdoor trash cans usually aren’t as stylish as some modern kitchen trash cans are.

Here are a few things you should keep in mind when choosing an outdoor trash can.

1. Size

What size do you need? This often depends on how often your trash is collected and how much trash your family produces on a weekly basis. I have lived in places where the trash is collected twice per week, and I have lived in other places where the garbage is only collected once per week. If your trash is only collected once per week, then you probably should consider getting a large outdoor trash can, or maybe two smaller ones.

2. Maneuverability

This is one of my favorite things about outdoor trash cans. I tend to like garbage cans with wheels. There are two major reasons for this. The first reason is that these waste bins can become very heavy. If they are on wheels, they become much easier to move around. The second reason is that outdoor trash bins on wheels last longer. If you habitually drag your outdoor trash can to the curb, this over time will damage the bottom of the container. Then you will begin to get holes and leakage, until eventually the entire bottom falls apart. It may cost a few extra dollars to purchase a good bin with wheels, but this extra investment is usually worth it.

3. Plastic or Metal

The classic steel trash can is sometimes a great choice. This is the type of trash bin you may remember Oscar the Grouch hanging out in (hey, if I lived in an outdoor trash can, I’d probably be grouchy too!). Lately though, most people opt for a plastic outdoor trash can. Plastic trash cans have become a popular alternative, and can often be just as durable as metal waste bins. Metal cans can often become dented and deformed, while plastic trash cans will much more readily hold their shape. Of course, this depends on the quality of the plastic. Rubbermaid is a popular brand that has a proven track record for producing a high quality, durable outdoor trash can.

No matter which outdoor trash can you decide upon, make sure to perform your due diligence. Shop around and compare prices. With so many different options out there, there is no reason to pay an extraordinary amount of money for an outdoor trash can.
