Dog Proof Trash Can
Many people often wonder about buying a dog proof trash can. If you don’t own a dog, then you are lucky (and you probably aren’t reading this page!). For those of us that DO have a dog, we are well aware of this common problem. We will often leave our house to go to work, or perhaps for a nice dinner with our significant other. When we return, we find the garbage can tipped over, trash strewn all over the place, and little Fido with a guilty look on his face. For added comic effect, sometimes he may have a piece of garbage stuck to his paw or hanging out of his mouth!

So what is there to do about this problem? Isn’t there a dog proof trash can we can buy to prevent this messy problem? While you may be hard-pressed to find a specifically designed dog proof trash can, there are quite a few precautions and tips you might try in order to make your waste bin “dog proof”.
1. Get a Smaller Dog
If your dog is too small to knock over the trash bin, then you won’t have to worry about this problem. Just kidding! This isn’t a real solution at all. But it does lead me to my next tip.
2. Get a Heavier Trash bin
Seriously, if you get a heavier trash bin that your dog is incapable of tipping over, then you effectively have a dog proof trash can. A great choice for this might be a stainless steel or steel trash can. The heavier the bin is, and the harder it is to tip over, the better. The next time you are in the store, test a few bins to see which is the toughest to tip over.
3. Get a Secure Lid
Simple, right? Get a lid that snaps on tight. Again, you’ll need to test this out before you put your full confidence in it. Most of the time, your dog gains access to the waste bin by knocking it over and then pulling the contents out. If the impact from the fall causes the lid to pop off, then you haven’t found a good enough trash container.
4. Bolt it to the Wall
This is the most inconvenient method, but also the most effective. However, you may have to resort to this, especially if you have a larger breed of dog. Some trash bin systems may come with a ready-made kit complete with holes and screws so that you can easily attach the container to your wall or counter. Even if your trash can doesn’t come with a kit, it is often a simple matter to drill some holes in it. Once you’ve got your garbage can attached to the wall, there is no way that it will be tipped over.
Hopefully this article has given you some ideas of how to make a dog proof trash can. The most practical advice is to always hunt around for the best deals and to try out a bunch of different models to see which one is right for you.
